I've been having a really hard time this week--much harder than any so far, I think. I seem to have picked up some intestinal bug, so I feel sick whenever I try to eat anything, no matter how plain and beige it is, and this makes me pretty miserable. And then once I feel sick and miserable my spirits get down and I decide that I'm regressing, the tumor is getting bigger, and that this is basically what dying feels like.
So yes--the brain is a strange and wonderful place, but it also has some areas in it that you just want to stay away from. I used to know this once upon a time, but it's hard to remember that when you're just lying around moaning all the time.
It doesn't help that there are new articles out in the New York Times on the relationship between sugar and cancer. Are they trying to take away all my reasons for living?!! Cancer cells apparently thrive on sugar. 'Tis best to eliminate processed sugars from the diet altogether. This means, I suppose, that making a See's truffle run mid-week is a very bad idea, even if the sugars therein are mixed with the great anti-oxidant of dark chocolate. After all, I'm really not interested in proliferating my cancerous brain cells.
Even if chocolate does make me really happy.
Sigh...

I'm sorry you're sick. That just plain sucks.
Have you tried stevia as a replacement for sugar? It's a sweet herb. There are a few cookbooks out there with dessert recipes using it -- I have not tried them, so I cannot say they are any good, but it's an option.
Also, some vegan chocolate is made with natural sweeteners. There are also some dark chocolate bars and such made with stevia. I have read, though, that chocolate sweetened with stevia can be bitter, so I have not tried them.
Btw, I am diabetic, so I know exactly how frustrating it is to want chocolate and know you should not have it.
I'm sorry that you're sick. Just remember to keep your head up. You should try and get in contact with Drew Olanoff, he is a cancer survivor, and is a great advocate for beating cancer and keeping a positive outlook even while sick. His email is drdrew@gmail.com if you're interested. Or before you email him, you can check out his websites: drewolanoff.com & blamedrewscancer.com. You're in my prayers and I hope you feel better soon :)
Thank you Yara and Rachael! The positive comments really help. I'll be on the lookout for those chocolates with the natural sweeteners.
I just found out there's a nasty stomach bug making the rounds here. It sounds pretty much like whatever it is I got. But at least it's nice to know that that's all it is and that it'll go away soon. And now I'm going to go poke around at the "blame drew's cancer" website!
I'm with Yara, at least where straight sugar is concerned: stevia is a wonderful replacement! It has been used in Japanese diet Coke (or Coke Light, as they call it) since at least the late 80s. I have a friend who grows stevia in his back yard... intensely sweet.
How is school? I miss it already. Don't think I will last much longer than a single semester off.
I hope the bug dies off quickly and you feel better. Let me know if I can do anything... I still have two pounds of beans here for you. :)
