I've just spent the past two days toiling over the installation of various PC programs to no avail (why don't the danged things just do what they're supposed to?). First the wireless goes out, because Windows decides it can't see the driver anymore. To update the driver, you need the new service update--but guess what? I CAN'T DOWNLOAD IT: NO WIRELESS, DUH!!! And let's not even go into the part about how, when I go to the update center on another computer, hoping to download the fix to a disk, Microsoft tells me I need to use their worthless Internet Explorer instead of Firefox to download anything I need. And oh--the updated version, please. Not the cruddy three-year-old one you stashed in the back of your hard drive.
And so on, and so on, and so on.
It's just one thing after a bleeping 'nother. And I'm pretty savvy when it comes to computers, too.
There is one teensy, tiny little positive outcome here: I really, really, REALLY remember why it is I made the switch from PC to Mac in the first place. Too many days like this one. It's all so familiar.
And do you know? This NEVER happens on my Mac. As in, never.
I used to feel somewhat sanctimonious about my ability to work my way out of a PC jam. But I'll tell you: I don't miss those days at all.

I switched to Mac for their easy multilingual capabilities and stayed for the *nix back end once I started working IT. Micro$oft bloatware is nowhere on my Mac. Have you tried the new, free Word replacement, Beans? (For Mac) Oh, and Skitch? Skitch is a graphics program, and is still invite-only, I think, but I have a few. Fun fun fun to play with.
Those programs sound like great fun. I haven't tried them. I was stuck with Microsoft because of another program I'm using for school and its particular demands....bah. But I don't use if if I don't have to.
