I was just conversing with a friend this morning about all the various perturbing imponderables in the latest Harry Potter. Things that don't make rational sense according to the logic of the book itself. Like, why didn't Harry and Dumbledore just apparate onto the island to get the horcrux, instead of paddling through dangerous waters filled with the undead? Why, when Dumbledore lost his wand at the hands of Draco, did he not shout "Accio wand!" to recover it, as Harry himself had so many times in the past? For that matter, why didn't Hogwarts just use the time-turner, like they did in Prisoner of Azkaban, to turn back time and thwart the Death Eaters altogether? How could the locket have disappeared from the center of the island at the hands of one "R. A. B.", when two people are so clearly required to retrieve it? Why can't Ginny Weasley go with Harry on his quest for the other horcruxes, when Ron and Hermione are allowed to? Harry cares about them too, obviously, so that "I care about you" argument doesn't really hold water in Ginny's case.

There are other small logic lapses too, obviously. The biggest one for me is still how Harry is supposed to defeat the Dark Lord when he's such a sucky student and barely passing his courses. Look where Snape and Voldemort were when THEY were his age--they were inventing their own spells by then, fer cryin' out loud, and in Voldemort's case, already plotting to take over the world. Harry is very, very average, except for that much-touted sense of courage and righteousness. It just doesn't make sense.
I'm betting Rowling is aware of all these inconsistencies and has answers for them. And I still think the "fake locket" is the real horcrux. Hmmm. Meanwhile, I'll bet some Visine could do wonders for Voldy's red-eye.

I would just like to say in response to the logic problems raised in the "more potter ponderings" post, that none of them are accurate. For example, R.A.B was not alone in retrieving the locket, he was with Kreature(stated in Book 6). Also, Dumbledore and Harry did not Apparate to the island because it was not possible, Voldemort set enchantments to prevent it. And finally, Harry could not 'Accio' the wand on the Tower because he was Immobilised and wasn't free until Draco and Snape had left. But I do see a problem in that shouldn't Snape be the wands' master? After all he killed Dumbledore, not Draco who simply disarmed him.
I think the reason Harry can defeat Voldemort is because Voldemort believes it. No one who has ever tried has succeded because Voldemort believes himself truly invincible. The Prophecy stated (in Voldy's mind) that Harry has the power to kill him so he fears it and believes it. Voldy chose to believe that and therefore makes Harry the only one able to defeat him. This is ensured when he tried to kill Harry, as he [Voldemort] was going to use Harry's murder to make a final Horcrux. Instead, it backfired and Harry actually became a Horcrux - hence the scar, visions and greater understanding of Voldemort. So although Harry is not especially talented, it is the importance Voldemort has placed on Harry that gives him the power over Voldemort. That and his ability to love, which harms Voldemort.
