little worlds
Sometimes I think that, more than the job, the education, the academic mission, and all that, what really marks your usefulness to the world is all the little critters that depend on you. Much of my day is spent on little mundane tasks--feeding the cat, the dog, and the fish--they get so excited!--and taking care of my daughter: pouring her cereal, packing her sandwich, washing her clothes, chauffeuring her to school and all her activities.
And no one is so grateful to see me as my daughter, or the dog, or the cat. I can't say I make much of a dent on the universe anywhere else, but to that little household, I do indeed.
