Susan is a Bad Name

Current Reading: The Princess and the Goblins.

I was just recently reflecting on the curse of certain names. Pretty much all the Susans I know, for example, are bossy alcoholics. I'm sure there are a few perfectly normal, non-alcoholic Susans out there, but I haven't met them. The name seems to bear a certain burden that can be overcome only by the strongest of wills.

Lisa is another such name: I have yet to meet a Lisa who is not completely mad....at least when it comes to relationships. They shriek about their love lives; they have affairs; they make eyes at married men. It's too bad, because I really love the name....but such a cost. My husband and I rejected the name Lisa for our daughter, in fact, because we agreed that all Lisas are mad. At least the ones we've met. And we want our kid to have a happy relationship one day, so....Lisa was out.

The same character branding seems to go on for Jeffs. All the Jeff's I've met have been big blustery types. This does not include Geoffs, of course, which are a different breed altogether. Just Jeffs. Frequently Jeffs have profound masculine issues, which they compensate for by talking loudly and taking offense easily. However, Jeffs can be okay once you get past the bluff...they may be nice, insecure folk on the inside.

Unlike Lisas and Susans, who only get worse the better you know them.

no idea who you are. was just browsing blogs. I wanted to tell you about a Jeff. He was my orientation committee chair here at my school - Grove City College - and he was totally into himself and being like the coolest ever, but only in that, I'm not really trying thing. Anyway, just thought you should know that you are dead on with the lisa and jeff.
